The National Green Jobs Corps


National Green Jobs Corps is the Australian Government’s environmentally focused work experience and accredited training program for 17–24 year olds

As Australia moves forward towards a low pollution future, National Green Jobs Corps will provide young job seekers with opportunities to develop skills in emerging green and climate change related industries

National Green Jobs Corps participants will be offered a combination of work experience, skill development and accredited training. Participants will work on projects focused on conservation, protection and rejuvenation of Australia’s natural environment and cultural heritage.

Involvement in National Green Jobs Corps leads to a nationally recognised qualification which will help lead to future employment and training opportunities.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

National Green Jobs Corps is a free program open to:

Income support recipients aged 17–24 years who are:

  • Receiving Youth Allowance (other), Newstart Allowance or Parenting Payment and not working more than 15 hours per week, or

  • Disability Support Pension recipients willing to work 15 hours per week or more, and

17–20 year olds who are not in receipt of Income Support Payments and not working more than 15 hours per week or in full-time education.

National Green Jobs Corps projects

National Green Jobs Corps projects will run for 26 weeks with participants spending an average of 25 hours per week doing hands-on work experience and accredited training.

National Green Jobs Corps projects will focus on the conservation, protection and rejuvenation of the local environment or cultural heritage. The majority of projects will be team based activities developed in conjunction with local communities and groups to ensure local needs are met. Types of projects that participants will be involved in include:

  • bush regeneration

  • beach and dune rehabilitation

  • wildlife and fish habitat protection

  • flora, fauna and land surveys and audits

  • community consultation and surveys relating to the environment

  • training and hands-on experience in the installation of energy efficiencies (such as insulation for buildings) designed to reduce carbon emissions, and

  • developing community information and education products.

Each project will provide participants with the opportunity to develop teamwork and leadership skills while preparing for employment opportunities.

Accredited Training

The training provided under National Green Jobs Corps is designed to provide opportunities to gain vocational skills tailored towards environmental and climate change growth or emerging environmental industries.

National Green Jobs Corps providers will conduct an assessment of participant’s training before they commence a placement. ParticiPlease complete the Referal Form and forwardpants without a year 12 or equivalent qualification will be encouraged to undertake a Certificate II level qualification. Participants who already have a Year 12 or equivalent qualification will be able to make progress towards a higher qualification. All participants will be given the support needed to achieve a qualification tailored to their needs and interests.

National Green Jobs Corps Supplement

Participants receiving income support payments such as Newstart Allowance, Youth Allowance (other) and Parenting Payment are eligible to participate in National Green Jobs Corps. Participants may also be eligible to receive the National Green Jobs Corps Supplement of $41.60 per fortnight in addition to regular payments to assist with the costs of participation.
